The 18th edition of the Puig Vela Clàssica Barcelona regatta was presented this morning at Barcelona City Hall with speeches by the Honorable Mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni; the Executive Chairman of Puig, Marc Puig; and the President of the Real Club Náutico de Barcelona, Jordi Puig.

The Puig Vela Clàssica regatta has established itself as a key event on the Mediterranean classic yacht racing calendar.

Organized by Puig and the Real Club Náutico de Barcelona, with the support of the Barcelona City Council, the 18th edition will bring together from July 9 to 12 some of the most outstanding gems of 19th and 20th-century naval architecture.

More than 40 boats have registered for this edition, coming from Spain (Sonata, Islander), England (Argyll, Clarionet), France (Falcon, Irina VII), the United States (Manitou), Germany (Legolas), New Zealand (Hallowe’en), and Italy (Amorita), among others.

This edition will also feature a new trophy created by the design studio La Granja Design, which will henceforth be displayed at the Real Club Náutico de Barcelona.

The Mayor of Barcelona, the Hon. Mr. Jaume Collboni, emphasized: “Barcelona is proud to once again host one of the most prestigious regattas in the Mediterranean. A regatta that reconnects us with sailing and the sea.” He added, “This regatta is a living expression of our maritime identity and strengthens us as a city of the sea.” He also highlighted: “The combination of sport and Barcelona is unbeatable. We want sport to be a meeting point and we invite all Barcelonans to enjoy this historic regatta.”

Marc Puig, Executive Chairman of Puig, stated: “Since our founding more than 110 years ago, we at Puig have always taken pride in our roots in Barcelona. The Puig Vela Clàssica, as well as the Puig Women’s America’s Cup held in Barcelona last year, are proof of that.” He also noted that this regatta is an opportunity to showcase Barcelona’s character to the world. He emphasized that classic sailing is “an event that brings together individuals and families who share a passion for the sea and boats that are true museum pieces.”

For Jordi Puig, President of the Real Club Náutico de Barcelona, the Puig Vela Clàssica regatta is “one of the most important nautical events in the world; a unique opportunity to enjoy true sea treasures in the Mediterranean. The course of the races allows hundreds of people to enjoy the tactics and strategy of the competition as the boats sail very close to the Barcelona coast.”

The 18th edition of the Puig Vela Clàssica regatta has established four main categories based on the design, age, and size of the participating boats:

Vintage Boats: built in wood or metal and launched before December 31, 1949.
Classic Boats: built in wood or metal according to original plans and launched between January 1, 1950, and December 31, 1975.
Modern Classics: classic design boats with modern construction using state-of-the-art materials (Leonardo Yachts, Spirit Yachts, Hoek Design…).
Big Boats: Vintage and Classic boats over 23 meters in length.

An experience open to the city of Barcelona

The Puig Vela Clàssica regatta is open to the city for the enjoyment of all its citizens and visitors. For four days, the city will have the opportunity to witness these century-old boats in action.

This edition of the Puig Vela Clàssica regatta will feature iconic vessels such as the Islander, which holds the record for solo circumnavigation of the globe, and the Manitou, which was used by John F. Kennedy during his presidency of the United States.

La Barceloneta, Port Olímpic, and Port Vell are some of the key spots from which classic sailing enthusiasts can follow this edition of the regatta, transforming Barcelona’s coastline into a stage for nautical passion and creating unforgettable images.
